What the next Snowsport Generation is upto!
205 Kilometers of piste, 46 lifts two 19 year olds three and a half months! This is Verbier, Switzerland a resort for the rich and famous and the gnarly ski bums alike.
My trip started in early December, working in the confines of Les Esserts which is the baby run of Verbier. The lifts there consist of a magic carpet and a small poma. I was told this is where I was to stay working the whole season. I decided this was not right for me. As I left my job my friend Anthony arrived at the end of January, we managed to pull together some jobs guiding friends of friends into the backcountry or off piste, we hired a small chalet in the Savoyleres area and continued our rampage of skiing and partying.
Most of our days consisted of waking up to the argument of who was to clean the dishes that morning, just as it was about to be cleaned one of us would actually stumble past the window and realise that it had snowed 40 cm that night - there goes the cleaning! We would rush to have the first shower due to the fact that we had a minimal supply of hot water, dig through the clothes to find there was a sock thief around and finally pull a matching pair out in triumph! Now, as being in the latter stages of our life at 19, we were not too fond of stomping through the village with skis and backpacks for twenty minutes, so we solved the problem by renting a chalet that you can ski to the front door, and conversely leave in that manner. We were then out the door, throwing our skis down and had our own run down to the lift.
We prided ourselves on our day’s achievements, how many runs we could do, how far we could walk, and of course first tracks. At one point there was a guided group in front of us climbing the famous ‘Stairway to Heaven’ and they were making the path which, if you don’t know consists of agonising pain, grunting and cursing, losing your leg up to your hip step after step. So we followed this lot up the hill, finally when they collapsed up at the top, we rushed past, clicked our skis on and evilly skied off to get a mouth full of powder.
After a day of this when your legs no longer work, and hunger has the better of you, we would ski down and relax in the sun outside La Rouge and have a few drinks. Before long we would be clobbering down the street to the Farinet après ski. Now this place is interesting, when walking in you see a sign that reads “If you can read this your not drunk enough”. That pretty much sums it up. Luckily SOS goes well in all conditions even the bar!
Overall the trip was amazing, a great experience and something I will always remember. The Long beautiful runs in the most amazing mountain range in the world, guiding people into hidden valleys and couloirs the memories of Verbier will be in my life forever.
